There was a strong call for statehood in the Oklahoma Territory because of the rising population in the Twin Territories as well as demands for change. American Indian leaders opposed joint statehood because they thought an independent state would represent their needs better. They drafted a constitution in 1905, but it was denied by Washington, DC, because of fear that it would become a Democratic state.
