The correct answer is: a belief that man is superior to nature

Ahab is driven by his thirst for revenge, and his occupation in the first place tells us that he believes he is superior and he can conquer nature. This chapter is very important because it also offers insight into the motivation behind this hunt. Even though Ahab got hurt when he tried to capture the White Whale, he is still trying to go after him and get his revenge.
