    The correct sentence is the first one. Louise went to the grocery store to buy groceries for the week; however, she left her shopping list at home.

    There are two independent clauses in this sentence. In this example, they are properly separated with a semicolon (; ) and a conjunction ("however"). They could also function as two completely separate sentences, but this is the next best solution.
