Adolescence is a time of significant physical and emotional development. Gender roles become more defined and there is peer pressure to fit into the stereotypes of what society characterizes as acceptable male and female roles and behaviours. Gender stereotypes and norms produce scripts and rules for femininity and masculinity which women and men re-enact (Milestone and Meyer, 14). The pressure to conform to gender roles set forth by society is perpetuated time and time again and is clearly evident in the movie Easy A. When the lead female and male characters venture outside the conventional role expected of them, they are ostracized and made to feel that their behaviour is unacceptable. This film expertly portrays the gender inequality that exists between males and females and the double standard that Olive is subjected to. As a result of these factors, social marginalization and feelings of low self-worth are portrayed by the characters.
