Read the excerpt from an unsigned review in the St. Louis Globe, May 13, 1899. There are some pretty bits of description of Louisiana Creole life, and there are two or three minor characters in the book that are drawn with a deft hand. After reading the whole story, it can not be said that either of the principal characters claims admiration or sympathy. It is a morbid book. What is this reader's response to Chopin's writing? The reader is critical of Chopin's main characters. The reader favors Chopin's Southern style. The reader admires Chopin's careful characterizations. The reader is critical of the regional details.

    The reader is critical of Chopin’s main characters

    The reader kind of praises a couple of the minor characters, that they seem to be written well, but the main characters the reader does not seem to like at all. He says that they are not worthy of admiration or sympathy and that overall they contribute to the book feeling so morbid.
