For this quiz, write two paragraphs on Poe's "The Raven". In the first, give the main idea of the poem, and indications of the speaker, plus general poetic devices within it. In the second paragraph, show how sound devices move the poem's meaning along effectively.

Use plenty of textual evidence (quotes, etc ...) in both paragraphs.

The main idea of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven is loss, lonelines and regret. The speaker is clearly a lonely haunted man, this is clearly shown in the next line: "Eagerly i wished the morrow, vainly I had sought to borrow, from my books surcease the sorrow, sorrow for the lost Leonore".

Poe's sound device of choice is Alliteration, when there is a repetition of the beginning sound, as it can be heard in the following line: While i nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
