Thomas à Becket was the Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry II - - who elevated Becket to the position because he believed he could control the church through him. When Becket persisted in standing on his convictions and the rights of the church - - in opposition to Henry - - Henry declared, "Won't someone rid me of this turbulent priest?" His guards took him at his word and ambushed Becket at the altar in the cathedral, brutally murdering him.
