The answer is A because the main character has frequent imaginations about what it would be like to live like the wealthy, and how her surroundings would be like: "She imagined vast saloons hung with antique silks, exquisite pieces of furniture supporting priceless ornaments, and small, charming, perfumed rooms, created just for little parties of intimate friends, men who were famous and sought after, whose homage roused every other woman's envious longings." This small portion from the excerpt clearly captures the fact that the main character would want to be among such riches, but she can only dream of it, never live in it.
