The poem "A Red, Red Rose" by Robert Burns is a poem about a couple's love and departure. It's likely that the author was traveling when he met his lover, or is leaving to go on an expedition far away "And I will come again, My Love, Although it were ten thousand mile!" Although Burns is expressing that his love will last forever, he mentions that his love is like a rose "that's newly sprung in June" meaning that their love started shortly before departure. Its probable that the relationship will end as quickly as it started.

The separation might be because her lover had to go to the war or had to leave for some time in order to work and make some money. Whatever the reasons are, they're external not concerning their relationship as a couple.
