Those who sacrifice are said to be the wisest since these people have offered more to the people they care about rather than thinking about themselves. True wisdom can be found in the love for the recipient regardless of the materials they have given. It is through giving and sacrifice that they understand more about the person and, most especially, themselves.

Della and Jim both make sacrifices for each other because they care about each other. Della sacrifices her hair, and Jim sacrifices his watch. Even though their sacrifices make them unable to use each other's presents, they realize how important their love is. This makes them wise, as the theme suggests.
