Nick tells us that after participating in World War I, he comes back home. However, now that he is back, he realizes that home does not feel the way it felt before. He gets bored of the Midwest and decides to move to New York and try to work on Wall Street, because this is the profession that he thinks everyone has nowadays.

This supports Nick's vision of the American Dream. He thinks America is exemplified by the money that is made on Wall Street and the luxury an lifestyle that can be seen in New York. Moreover, part of this "dream" is being able to move and try your luck somewhere else, which is the change Nick is embarking on.
