    Narrator meets Bedloe; he is sickly looking and is very peculiar in appearance; Bedloe has neurologic problems, Templeton takes care of him; Templeton is a mesmerist, he convinced Bedloe to try it and performs mesmerism on him all the time - - they develop a strong connection; Bedloe goes for a walk and doesn't return, they find him later and he says that he got lost; sees a man chased by a hyena in the woods and drinks from a spring; comes across a town that seems like it is from the middle east, men are going to war; joins the weaker team and finds that they are surrounded; Bedloe gets hit with an arrow that looks like a snake and dies; gathers himself together and runs out of the city; Templeton shows him a painting of what he has just described; it was the actual events of the insurrection of Cheyte Sing - Oldeb was killed by the arrow there. Templeton had been writing them down at the time Bedloe experienced all this; Bedloe gets a cold and dies from a leach, his name is spelled without the e in the obituary
