In The Interesting Narrative of Life of Olaudah Equiano, he prefaces his book by stating that, while everything that happened hurt him in many ways, he feels more than compensated because it lead him to find Christianity. Olaudah wrote this book in retrospective (looking back after everything had already happened). By the time he wrote it, he was already a devote christian and missionary, which explains his use of Christian teachings in his text. Therefore, your best answer is to linken himself to Jesus.
