Europe means "wide gazing" or "broad of aspect".

How did Europe get its name?

The country got its name from the Greek roots "eur" which literally means broad and "op-"meaning eye. In mythology, by the ancient Greek, Europa, a Phoenician princess was believed to be abducted by Zeus after assuming the form of a white bull. Later, according to the mythology, Europa stood for central-north Greece. By 500 BC, Europa had been extended to the northlands encompassing the lands of which is now called "Europe".
