The Pacific island groups have big differences when it comes to demographics. Some island groups have high number of inhabitants, while some have very small populations.

Micronesia is the island groups that is by far the least populated of the Pacific island groups, having just below half a million inhabitants. The most populous island is Guam with 161,000 people, while the Wake Island has only 12 people living on it.

Polynesia and Melanesia have much higher populations than Micronesia, and one of the main reasons for that is that they have much larger islands, thus more space. The most populous islands of Polynesia are the Hawaii Islands, while on Melanesia it is Papua New Guinea.

The Indonesia islands have the most population of these island groups, and the country of Indonesia itself is one of the most populous in the world. The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, has more population than all of the three other island groups combined.
