When Oedipus hears the drunken man say he is not the son of Polybus and Merope, his pride and anger initiate the problems that follow. Instead of believing his parents, whom he says were insulted by this accusation, he sneaks off to the oracle to ask whether they are really his parents because he is angry about the way people are talking about him.
