Well, beowulf (from what i remember from the book) made a loud noise causing grendals ears to ring in pain and then he (stabbed him or hit him) in the ear drum and i think he cut off his arm. ive read so many different versions of the book so im not too sure on how it went down in your version, but thats the main jist.
