Hester has learned to live, more or less, with the scarlet letter. dimmesdale, it seems, is hardly able to cope. do you agree that dimmesdale would have been better off if hester had named him as pearl's father seven years earlier?

    Yes, he's suffering from guilt and if his name were to be revealed, he'd suffer another way, but not slowly
