From the book hatchet brain was so used to the ready availability of food that he was not prepared to seek it in the wilderness. What did he finally do?

    He finds food in the wilderness, such as berries that make his stomach upset the next morning. Later on, he kills a bird and is disgusted with the organs in him, unable to eat him, he tries to find another food source. But then, he decides to take out the organs of the bird and cook it.
