The Jews of Sighet were quite optimistic and thought that the Germans were defeated in the war.

By the spring of 1944, the Jews of Sighet were pretty optimistic about the outside world, they thought the Germans were on the verge of defeat and nothing would happen to them. They even heard about the incoming danger but, most of them ignored it and went on minding their own business thinking that nothing would harm them or create problems for them. This mindset was even criticized by Wiesel.

We all come across people who respond to news headlines this way, they tend to think that it would not affect them or their community. This behavior is not always good as it indirectly promotes ignorance. For example, the majority of the world population's reaction to global warming.
