    This is false. There was no sense of doubt in it. It was firmly believed that the British empire was great and would continue to stay great forever. Doubt was a common motif earlier in the Romantic period, and later during the Modern/Postmodern periods. During the victorian era, realism thrived and there was no doubt at all.
