Here's a real answer: Use similar words (or even the same words) when speaking about a situation, idea, movement, or essentially anything that can be compared to show that they have equal importance. For example:

    The dog is walking.

The feline frantically paces to the kitchen.

This is incorrect parallel structure because the wording suggest the cat's walking to the kitchen is more important than the dog's walking.

    Correct parallel structure:

    The dog is walking.

    The cat is walking.

You can also do variations of this as long as the two seem relatively equal in importance. It makes a paragraph look generally better and more consistent with its flow. Consistency within a paragraph can be crucial.
