    The correct answer is

    b. Robinson uses it as a calendar.

    Basically, he engraves when he got there on it and then he puts markings on it to count how many days and months has he spent on the island. He uses it as a primitive calendar but it works well and serves its purpose. Eventually he fills up the entire post.
