Is it true that Figurative language and colloquial language are not appropriate for academic writing.

    Basically true - although when writing proper names of places, people, things, there can be colloquial and figurative names that would be included. But language usage and sentence structure should follow standard modern English form with no slang, period, or accent driven sentences to convey academic ideas.
