Ballard and his crew erupted with cheers and applause. Someone

opened a bottle of champagne for a toast, but the mood suddenly darkened after

they noticed that it was nearly 2:20 a. m.-the exact time the ocean liner had sunk and

taken more than 1,500 passengers and crew to their deaths. The thought of it hit

Ballard like a shock. "We were embarrassed we were celebrating," he later told 60

Minutes. "And all of a sudden we realized that we should not be dancing on

someone's grave."
