Read the excerpt from Ernest Hemingway's "Soldier's Home." A distaste for everything that had happened to him in the war set in because of the lies he had told. All of the times that had been able to make him feel cool and clear inside himself when he thought of them; the times so long back when he had done the one thing, the only thing for a man to do, easily and naturally, when he might have done something else, now lost their cool, valuable quality and then were lost themselves. What does the excerpt reveal about Krebs? He fought valiantly while at war overseas. He is happy to be home with his friends and family again. He is dissatisfied and feels disillusioned with his surroundings. He is a skilled liar, even though he does not enjoy telling untruths.

That Kreb made bad decisions, and if he thought about his actions / reactions then maybe the outcome of each situation would have ended in a different way. Accept the truth and tell the truth.

The correct answer is: He is dissatisfied and feels disillusioned with his surroundings.

Indeed, Krebs was a completely different person from who he was before leaving for the war. He has gone through several atrocities and hardships which have changed him. However, his hometown, his family and his friends have not been through the same experience and they have not changed. Their values have remained the same while Krebs' have changed or simply died in the grim reality of war.

Although he is somewhat relieved to be back home and meet his family and friends again; he is initially unable to speak about what he went through. When he is finally able o speak about it people are not willing to listen anything other than what confirms their own assumptions. Krebs decides to tell them what they want to hear but that affects him.

This is the main reason why he is dissatisfied. He has lost his innocence and cannot bear the innocence of his family and friends, because it reminds him who he was and that person is gone, good as dead. He is disillusioned with his surroundings because he thought that things would be better when he returned but because he is a different person has cannot find harmony in his surroundings anymore.
