What Abraham Lincoln intends to say in this sentence:

"I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice."

    Lincoln means that forgiveness is better than punishment or revenge. I think that he implies that giving someone a second chance might actually make them a better person, but punishment would put them in a stray minded path.
