Athena quickly changes his appearance from an old man to a young one. Telemachus doesn't believe it's his father, he thinks the Gods are playing tricks on him. He sees his father transform from a beggar/poor to Odysseus, and immediately sees it as a trap, a God ready to release their wrath.
