Grendel is presented as a coward in this epic. He was spawned in slime and he is the son of Cain, therefore cursing him to exile ... so, he is a big gruesome beast that was strong enough to lift a man and tear him up with barely any effort. He is a coward because he only attacks at night when the men of Danes are asleep and their guard is down.
