The book depicts different stages of hell and with these stages suffers different types of people. In this case, the author Dante cited examples of popular men and women from different era who failed in overcoming evil. They were not able to resist temptations therefore committed different sins. Sins that are still committed by the modern era and in the story these people where punished differently according to the stages of hell they are in.
