Thomas Jefferson began the Declaration of Independence with a list of basic human rights is to prove how badly the British government was treating the American colonists. He also used this list of human rights violations to argue that the colonists had a right to overthrow the British government in America as it had abused its fundamental right to rule. Jefferson also directly attacked King George stating the twenty instances where King George had directly violated the rights of the American settlers.
