The first answer is correct - Lindo Jong's actions in The Joy Luck Club are influenced by the cultural clash between American culture and Chinese culture. Lindo Jong is a strong character with a very defined sense of self, and it is this self-awareness that leads her to act the way she does within the novel.

I believe the answer is: American culture vs. Chinese culture

initially, Lindo Jong tried to give her children the combination of the best part of American culture with the chinese culture, but there are too many difference between the two. For example, in chinese culture, elderly shall always be treated with respect while in American culture, people could address the elderly with their name directly.
