Let's start off with the meaning of the character's names, Fortunato means fortunate while Montresor means my treasure. So let's think about how fortunate Fortunato really is: 1) he's rich and admired 2) he's buried alive and will die alone, in the dark, and thirsty. I don't believe that the name means that he himself is lucky, but rather his character represents luck that has brought about ruin to Montresor. Sure it's laughable that the fortunate one was rather unfortunate at the end but surely one can delve deeper. I'm getting a weird poetry vibe from the names actually, like ones that you'd sing. Whole emphasis of this is how unlucky it was of him to insult the wrong guy who buries him alive.
