Ironically, Okonkwo's fear is what drives most of his brave actions. He has this fear of becoming a shameful disgrace to society like his father was. He has a fear that he will not be respected, revered, and remembered, and he uses these fears to drive him to be the leader that he is in his village. Of course, Okonkwo being a tragic hero, his fatal flaw is pride which eventually leads to his downfall, but to get to the position of leadership, fear of being weak and pride in himself and his accomplishments were what gave him the respect and reverence he so greatly desired.
