Read the excerpt below and answer the question. "I do not believe that Snowball was a traitor at the beginning," [Boxer] said finally. "What he has done since is different. But I believe that at the Battle of the Cowshed he was a good comrade." "Our Leader, Comrade Napoleon," announced Squealer, speaking very slowly and firmly, "has stated categorically-categorically, comrade-that Snowball was Jones's agent from the very beginning-yes, and from long before the Rebellion was ever thought of." "Ah, that is different!" said Boxer. "If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right." In at least 150 words, identify the theme that is illustrated in this excerpt from Animal Farm and explain how it is developed in the story.

The theme that is illustrated is that of language and the way language is used for political propaganda. In this excerpt, Boxer questions Snowball's loyalty to the working class. Squealer, who is used by Napoleon, can convince Boxer that Snowball has always been a traitor. Squealer, who is a literate pig, uses his words to manipulate the rest of the animals. These are all illiterate. In this excerpt, he speaks "categorically" to manipulate the obedient working class. Boxer, the horse, represents the working class. Boxer represents the hard working people who tend not to question authority but they suffer the oppression from the ruling class. Besides, Squealer is very skillful with his words; he has lied about Snowball and about other things. However, Boxer and the other animals believe more in Squealer's words than in reality. This power of language has made Napoleon a dictator.
