The main theme of the poem refers to how the happiness of winning a contest is not complete if the reasons for winning it are selfish.

    Explanation:

Reading the poem we can see that the speaker wants to win the coloring contest. According to the speaker, winning this contest would bring huge satisfaction to your soul, it would be like discovering America, that is, it would be wonderful.

However, whoever wins the contest will win a pink Schwinn (a bicycle) and the speaker already has a purple Schwinn, but some of her colleagues do not have a Schwinn. Winning a pink Schwinn would be irrelevant to the speaker of the poem, but for some of her colleagues it would be wonderful.

With this, the speaker begins to reflect on whether it would not be selfishness on her part to win the contest, she is very concerned about this and realizes that the overwhelming feeling of winning a contest will not be full if the reasons for winning it are selfish. With this, the speaker decides to color her drawing in a more modest way.
