The primary setting of this story seems to be a campground, or an outdoors location, where a father and a son were spending a day together fishing. It seems that both characters were, or had been, hurt, but after being together, or reunited, for a few hours the father soon realized that their suffering had been mitigated (" ... David knew that old wounds were healing"). The two characters appear to cherish their time together greatly.
