    A thesis is an introductory sentence where the main argument of the essay is stated. If it is an analytical essay, it will state your findings. If it is an argumentative one, it will state the position you are taking on an issue.

    However, the provisional thesis is the one you develop at the beginning of your research. Therefore, it will most likely suffer some modifications as you develop your arguments. It does not necessarily have to be as detailed as the final thesis needs to be, as long as it provides you with enough direction to keep developing your analysis.
