How does Isaac Bashevis Singer develop the main character over the course of "The Day I Got Lost"?

I think he wanted he readers to see themselves in the main character. He thinks that many people are like Shemiel. People who are always busy looking at bigger things and tends to forget the small things. Over the course of the short story, the author had emphasized that we should also appreciate the simple things in our life.
