This rhyming variation and metrics are appropriate because Kubla Khan is full of imagination and expressive emotions. If he had used something that was strict or firm such as the sonnet form or the heroic couplet the value of the poem would go down because it would hold it as if it was in a cage. This way, Kubla Khan is very melodious and harmonious.
