The main conflict in the essay "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" is that the proper recognition of Negro artists will never exist in the society.

Langston Hughes talks about the African-American poets of his own time who either had an unconscious desire to be either a White or a conscious desire not to be black. He says that being a Negro this would be an impossible task of changing as per the Whites because he has been brought up as an African-American.
