The crime-detective short story of Ellery Queen in "Object Lesson" revolves around the loss of money by Miss Carpenter. Though Ellery suspects the three young boys of the theft, he also wanted to make them learn a lesson of how bad thug life is and what they can expect from reality.

The money that Miss carpenter lost had been placed in an envelope which was not what she found that morning. So, taking chance on the highly regarded detective Ellery Queen, the duo began to have a live crime solving the case in the class. When Ellery suggested that they begin with a body search, he also included it's only voluntary and no one who did not wish to be searched can raise his hand to tell them his objection. By doing this, Ellery hoped that the thief will be revealed as he will not be ready to be searched.
