Ifemelu feels the need to exaggerate her years in America because other immigrants like Aisha don't respect newcomers.

    Explanation:

The situation above happened when Ifemelu visited the salon in order to have her hair braided. Aisha works at the salon. She is also an African who lives in America, while Ifemelu has lived for 13 years.

However, when Aisha asked her about the length of her stay in America, she tried to ignore it at first. In the end, she lied and exaggerated to have lived for 15 years, instead of 13 years. This is because most Africans who live in America will show their respect according to the number of years you have been living there.

    So, this explains the answer.
