    In his first inaugural address, March 4, 1933 President Roosevelt said: "This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself ..."

    Roosevelt conveyed a message of hope to the American citizens; after the Great Crash, the ailing economy and the failing financial markets had brought the USA to a desperate situation. Roosevelt promised a "New Deal" to the American people, consisting on legal and financial reforms which led to economic recovery.
