Before Romans came, Britain was settled by various different pagan tribes. After Romans left, the standard of living was brought up to a much higher level. The heirs to the Roman ideal - Saxons, Danes, Normans, Plantagenets, Tudors, Georgians and Victorians - all of witch came after, tried to establish Britain as part of a wider empire, drawing on the example set by the Romans.
