The "Red Death" is symbolic for death, no matter how extravagant the house is no one can escape death. The rooms in the palace, lined up in a series, symbolize the stages of life. The rooms are allined from east to west, and the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This symbolizes sun as life, and night as death.
