An allusion is a reference to someone or something known from history, religion, politics, or some other branch of culture. Line 7 of The Garden, "They shall inherit the earth," alludes to the Bible (Matthew 5:5). There Jesus says, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth". What does the line mean in this poem?

A. That the poor are blessed

B. That the rich are evil

C. That the poor may inherit the earth because the are not as strong and sturdy as the wealthy

D. That the poor may inherit the earth because they are strong and sturdy, not because the are meek
