This question refers to the story "Young Goodman Brown," by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In it, Hawthorne tells the story of a man who is tempted to join the Church of the Devil, and during the course of the story realizes that most of his Puritan community already belong to it. However, the one thing that keeps him with God is the knowledge that his wife Faith is a good Christian. However, at the ceremony, Brown finds out that Faith is present as a future convert as well.

Brown then calls out to Faith, and asks her to look to heaven rather than to the dark. However, the moment he says it, he is alone in the forest. It is unclear whether the ceremony indeed happened or whether it was all a dream. Nevertheless, the experience alters Brown's life forever.
