What is the effect of the comparison "Like silent, hungry sharks that swim in the darkness of the sea, the German submarines arrived in the middle of the night."?

    During the WW2 German's attack ships using torpedoes underneath the ocean at night so they possibly kill any crew riding in the ships. Like sharks, they attack silently but fast as soon as they see and sense the blood of their victims.
