    B. silence or turn off his phone while he's studying.

Since, he uses his phone for everything. It is better to bring his phone with him and turn it on silent mode or turn it off whenever he has to study, rather than leave it at home and continuously wonder whether someone has sent him a text message or called him.

It is not very kind to tell his friends how irritating it is when they call him while he is studying, primarily because his friends do not know his study schedule, unless he specifically told them his study schedule and instructed them not to disturb him in those times, or there are urgent matters that he needs to know.

Putting his phone in his backpack so he can ignore incoming calls and messages may be a good idea as long as he turns his cell phone in a silent mode or turned it off. Hiding the phone does not silence the notification sound it makes whenever there is a text message received or a call.
